Published on 12-12-2011 02:41 AM Reading over at wired.com Sony's associate brand marketing manager Crystal MacKenzie informed them that the PS Vita will allow for multiple PSN accounts however the PSN account will be connected to their proprietary memory card, not on the PS Vita itself. Only drawback is you would have to do a system restore if you want to use multiple accounts that are stored on a single memory card.

Miyamoto, however, is getting up in age (59) and he'd very much like to get back in the development trenches rather than overseeing huge projects as he's done in recent years as the head of Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development.

XK3Y as opposed to x360key

The x360Key is a new item from the famous Wiikey Team. Well-known for one of the most popular line of Wii modchips, they dominated the marketplace correct up until a device known as the WODE came out. The WODE has been an extremly productive product becuase its bassically a hardware hack that lets you run games from a harddrive, insteaed of your original disc. Rather than the Wiikey team bringing out the identical item, they have been concentrating for over a year on performing the exact same factor for the xbox 360, and here it is!

The x360Key is an Xbox 360 drive emulator. What this means, is that once you load a game via the x360key the xbox truly thinks the game is loading via disc. The 360 thinks the drive is ejecting, a disc is being inserted, the tray closes, the disc spins up, after which loads. Obviously non of this really is really happening, its all by way of emulation, and the information is coming directly from your harddrive!

The x360key is based of Linux, just like the WODE was. This implies that it's compatible with numerous filesystems, but much more importantly, is that the feature list can grow and grow and grow. Initially the device will only be made to work with the "PHAT" xboxs and the 9504 and 0225 slim xboxs. You will find more Slim xbox types to come inside the future, so please look in the compatiblity table below to check if it is going to work on your box.

The remote is a straightforward but stylish piece of hardware that functions an OLED display and three buttons. It connects towards the x360key motherboard through a high speed USB2 connection. It also has USB for connecting USB hard drives and other devices. The OLED and buttons are employed to manage different aspects of x360key. It's also utilized for browsing attached USB media devices and launching games.

Positive aspects of the x360key are: Cheaper within the long run, due to the reality that you simply never need to burn any media, Upgradable Without having opening the console - the updates are via USB which indicates there isn't any have to consistantly get your xbox reflashed by professionals, Fasting loading times through USB, Future functions like a internet control panel will enable you to adjust games without having obtaining up off your lazy ass, No or Much less wear and tear on your DVD drives, Every person that has had a 360 for a whilst knows that 360 DVD drives aren't the most effective and maybe individuals and up obtaining faulty lasers after a couple of years, Drive replacements price about 0, This device will make sure that having a faulty drive is pretty significantly impossible becuase....you aren't utilizing it anymore, An alternative to c4eva....For a Lengthy time c4eva has an a wonderful job at generating firmwares for flashing DVD drives..the only issue is that the market is really significantly reliant on his work, Future DVD drives might get hacked by x360key team prior to c4eva.

As for Purchasing Info Try: x360key or xk3y

RIM PlayBook Android app limits detailed disappointingly

RIM has confirmed what Android functionality BlackBerry PlayBook owners can expect from their QNX tablets after the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps is released, and it makes for disappointing reading. The list of features confirmed by RIM engineers at Droidcon 2011 in Romania this week,  Thinq  reports, misses out on several high-profile – and much anticipated – components, such as SIP VoIP and widgets, as well as blocking any apps that rely on Google Maps or text-to-speech.

Discovering the igaming device M3i Zero for DS that a majority of home brew fanatics tend to be longing for

Device Opening

This extremely awaited M3i Zero has landed. A card which was gely|greatly|very|massively|widely|really|extremely|highly|enormously} desired within the homebrew scene due to the set of features. Not only is the components total upgradeable via the kernel, boot flash and firmware, the Operating system works with the very much trumpeted M3 Sakura. In the past just available to the Japanese. At present interpreted for the western european market.

Last November back when I was analyzing the M3 Real, I made a comment on the power of the hacked multiply loader Os. This provided the end consumer many choices, enough to accommodate the various desires of any Nintendo ds homebrew fanatic. I am satisfied to see those comments have been taken on board by Team M3. The M3i is the 1st available retail store card that supports a Dual Boot system as standard. You can easily change between TouchPod and Sakura by just pressing down the A button upon boot.

Anyway, enough with the blarney. Let's examine exactly what is inside of the hood of the new M3i Zero.

So what is Included in the Package.

Model M3i Zero is supplied in a sleek darker blue retail box emblazoned with the M3 logo and web page link. The back of the box describes the feature set of the card and also includes a graphic representation of the items in the box. The product packaging measurements, form and over-all finish, is precisely like the older M3 Real.

The items of the package are within a common clear plastic tray. These include the following: The M3i Zero card, that is situated in a plastic case with space for your Micro sd card. This is extremely much like the cases you get with memory cards for instance Kingston and Sandisk, a smallish USB 2.0 reader, decorated with a white-colored M3 logo design. However the USB reader only shares the visual appeal of the Sandisk reader but not the quality. It's functional, however I will often advise the purchase of a decent "branded" reader if you like to stay away from the dastardly blight, often known as data corruption.

The final part within the box is the useful firmware power supply cable. This is an unique piece of equipment. Distinct from the Supercard DSONEi technique. The M3 team surely have gone for a completely different form factor in relation to its energizing the flash card thru USB. As opposed to the whole card sitting in a slot 1 adapter. They have gone for a much sleeker but still fragile design. On one side of the power cable is a rigid ribbon cable, much like the types which joins the Ds touchscreen display to the motherboard. It inserts into the side of the M3i Zero card. Energizing the chip during the flash procedure.

Construct class.

Device M3i Zero is supplied in a black colored casing. The standard of plastic looks on par with the Acekard 2. It is not quite comparable to the prior M3 Real building, which felt solid as well as quite heavy. The two parts of the casing are held together by a clip design rather than the typical sealed/tiny screws. There is a notable IC bulge on the label side of the card. The label itself is a sleek blue/white layout having a yellow/white M3 Zero logo. The label have been placed directly on the card.

The card's "copper teeth" are not protected by the ordinary raised fins. The Pcb is green-colored. The microSD port is situated along the side of card. The spring offers a quite good action and click. The populated card slot is flush with the top of the casing. Inserting the card in to my Dsi wasn't any trouble. The IC bulge don't cause any complications by scraping the edges of my well used slot 1.

Over-all, I was satisfied with the overall manufacturing of the card. Its certainly not crafted as a tank yet it's not garbage R4 clone territory.

Unit installation.

M3i Zero ships as a empty card. Devoid of any kind of firmware. Here's the blurb from the good M3 guys "M3 unit don't include any kind of copyright data and / or firmware program, although buyers may update application to make M3i Zero become the most potent flash cart".

It is a pretty clever slice of chicanery by the M3 team. Simply put I assume this might help the card's transportation throughout some places over fervent customs inspections.

And so in order to get the beast up and running, we have to flash the card's firmware employing the provided USB power cable. Initially this seemed like a tricky venture for somebody as cack handed as me. The rigid ribbon cable end of the power lead looks fragile because of the wafer slender style and design. However but my fears was allayed, because it was quite uncomplicated to pop in the power cord into the side of the card. Following the readme directions, I copied the latest system software to the root of my newly formatted memory card, and the firmware dat file. I then hooked up the power cord to my Computer's USB hub. At once a red led started blinking from the M3i Zero's card housing. After 12-25 seconds, the led stopped so I unhooked the various cable from the card. I hurriedly popped the card right into the Nintendo dsi and shot the blighter up. Hiya Presto! I was greeted by a M3 symbol on the menu screen. Wonderful! A very pain-free installation.

I conducted the patented fire up the card without any Micro SD card test and the old delete a couple of system files test. The M3i Zero surpassed with flying colours, expressing the proper error codes for every single try out.

Summarizing.

Team M3 appeared to have acted on my feed-back concerning the M3 Real and introduced all of them on the M3i Zero. They have delivered the marvelous Sakura Graphical user interface into european union market place. Not just that, they had furthermore launched very first official dual boot system for almost any flash card. This approach boosts the power of the product by preserving really good compatibility although moving ahead with the Sakura codebase via application up-grades. The opportunity to up-date the kernel, boot flash and firmware only enhances the mixture. Such enhances the durability of the device.

Their M3i Zero has the very best suite of functions, both in hardware/software, available today for any home brew fanatic. This particular card has become my current firearm of preference for the Nintendo dsi. This is the very best recommendation I can give any Nintendo ds flash card. guide reference: M3i Zero

Is Nintendo 3DS Worth It?

When Nintendo 3DS was first unveiled at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo, the gaming device instantly became one of the year's most anticipated tech products. A lot are expected of 3DS, the next generation of the DS family, as it is billed as the first glasses-free 3D gaming system. Nintendo has apparently invested heavily in this technology, with the intent to compete with Apple's iPhone 4 and Sony's PSP 2. But is Nintendo 3DS worth the attention it is getting? In this article, I will discuss the key features of 3DS and assess whether the device would be a good buy.

The main selling point of Nintendo 3DS is, without question, the ability to deliver 3D contents without the need for the user to wear the dreaded 3D glasses. Since there is hardly any glasses-free 3D technology currently on the market, the device's impact could reach beyond video games. Early impressions of the 3DS have confirmed that the device is capable of showing 3D movies and videos, in addition to enabling 3D gaming. To address health concerns often associated with watching 3D contents, Nintendo has included a feature that allows users to turn off the 3D effect at any time. In short, Nintendo 3DS can display images in both traditional 2D as well as 3D.

One of the major problems with any new gaming device is the relatively small library of titles available at launch. Fortunately, Nintendo has gone a long way to make sure 3DS will have plenty of first- and third-party support. Over seventy 3DS games from more than two dozen developers have already been announced and are currently in development. For its part, Nintendo will supply at least 7 of the titles including the return of two long-standing franchises in Kid Icarus: Uprising and Pilotwings Resort. One should expect announcements of even more 3DS games in the coming months. Additionally, Nintendo 3DS is expected to be backward compatible meaning you will be able to play your old DS and DSi games on this system.

Another unique feature of Nintendo 3DS is the enhanced Wi-Fi capability. The device has the ability to download, share, and exchange contents wirelessly with other 3DS handhelds even while dormant. This is likely to greatly expand gaming options, creating a whole new social experience. The 3DS, with three functional cameras, is capable of taking 3D photos and videos. This feature is among the firsts of its kind and is sure to give 3D cameras a run for their money. Nintendo 3DS will also support motion control gaming as an optional feature.

Is Nintendo 3DS worth the hype? From what we know of the device, the 3DS appears to be a truly powerful gaming system. Nintendo has taken great pain in its attempt to address many of the issues associated with 3D technology, and handheld gaming in general. Obviously, Nintendo 3DS like all gaming devices that came before it has its share of pros and cons. As a result, we probably won't be able to accurately assess the product until it is available for purchase. But with so much top notched features included in the 3DS, its retail price won't be cheap. Still, Nintendo is well-known for targeting affordability and accessibility. One should expect the price to be at most 25% higher than that of a new DSi. Nintendo 3DS is set to release in either the holiday season or early spring 2011.

Team Xecuter DG-16D4S Unlocked Replacement PCB Update

From team-xecuter.com : [QUOTE] Now that production is fully underway of the newly designed DG-16D4S PCB we have not only been able to reduce our production costs due to a larger than expected volume of wholesale orders, but we have also closed a deal to source a great amount of very difficult to find parts at a greatly reduced priced. Our policy is always to be as competitive as possible, and these new savings will be reflected in the RRP and in the wholesale prices. We should reiterate that this is not a simple copy of the DG-16D4S board, but a custom made version with a new chipset (and not just a single IC change), and it will be completely solderless the install will simply be a cut and clip design.

P3 Samurai: A USB mod chip for the P3

Playstation 3 Slim by blogpokdotcom

It is real. Almost 4 years after its launch, the PlayStation 3's much vaunted security has finally been completely and unequivocally compromised. Within weeks, if not days, PS3 users ready to pay an exorbitant premium have the option of copying all the games they own - and any they don't - onto hard disk, and zip stops them from spreading them across the internet. You think that, just how do Sony deal with the problem? Can new firmware updates maintain the platform holder one step ahead of the hackers?

0

As sample "PS Samurai" hardware circulates around shops and modship suppliers around the world, further details emerge, giving us some understanding of how the system works. From that we can extrapolate the size of the task facing Sony because it embarks on what must surely be the biggest damage limitation exercise in its recent history. This attack on PStation security includes both software and hardware. A USB dongle is attached to the P3, and pressing the eject button on the console while it cold-boots causes the code on the stick to override the console's typical launch procedure. By analyzing views of the XMB witnessed in the now numerous YouTube videos, the dongle seems to inject elements from debug PS3 firmware onto the retail unit. The option to install PKG files, available only on development and test units, now works on the retail machine. From here, the main tool to "backing up" software is added onto the machine.

PS3 by so_cal_cesar

While you might not be familiar with a PKG file before, the chances are that you've installed plenty of them on your Playstation 3. Just about every type of program you download from PSN is incorporated in the PKG container. Once downloaded, the PS3 decompresses the data and installs it onto your PS3. On development and test/reviewer units, so-called "unsigned code" is routinely distributed on disc, via download or on USB flash drives in PKG format. The only difference between this and a regular PSN download is the fact that code isn't encrypted, enabling easier distribution of unfinished or review copy games (only Sony's mastering labs can encrypt, or "sign" code). The fact that the Install PKG option now appears on a retail unit gives us a strong indication as to how the new "Jailbreak" works as it's probably not present in the regular firmware. It suggests that elements of the bespoke system updates used on the debug PS3s are being injected into the memory of the retail unit. But exactly how?

Indeed! GT5 for the PS3 by ashoe

There are two potential explanations here. For starters, whoever is behind this is extremely clever and has isolated an exploit that allows for the injection of code over the USB port. More likely is that the USB-based tools Sony uses to test and recover PS3s with corrupt firmware have been leaked and reverse-engineered for more nefarious ends. PlayStation 3s locked into "factory service mode" have already been popping up every now and then for a long time, and the PC-side software that runs the USB dongle was leaked not long ago.

Now it would appear that the hardware has additionally been "liberated" from Sony's repair and test labs. This could sound somewhat implausible, but in a world where PS3 Slim photos circulate months before the launch and final units can be found in a Philippines marketplace, anything may be possible. Besides, the very same thing happened with the tools used to service the PSP right before the PSP-2000 launch in September 2007. In terms of the make-up of the dongle itself, pictures posted online of the internals show a simple USB device - what appears like an innocuous 48-pin microcontroller chip on the tiny PCB and not much else. It's quite astonishing to believe that the makers are requesting a colossal $130 for such a tiny piece of tech, and it's almost certain to be reverse-engineered, ripped off and duplicated by Chinese mass-suppliers within days of showing up in the market.

The software side of PS Samurai is freely available to download, installs onto a debug PS3 and throws up few surprises. It's quite a basic tool that rips off every single file on a game disc onto the internal HDD or else onto a USB flash drive or hard disk drive. It does appear that part of the encryption Sony uses on the files is stripped away (hashes on encrypted files change drastically), but the executable still won't work with no USB dongle in place. When picking a game to run, the machine drops back to the XMB. From now on, we could only speculate but it's reasonable to assume that the chip then diverts all major disc functions to the device in which the game-rip lies. As a vehicle for piracy then, all bases are covered, but is this really a "jailbreak" in the form recently sanctioned by the US courts? The mere existence of the backup manager - supposedly coded with tools stolen from Sony - indicate otherwise, and if the USB dongle is indeed cloned from the platform holder's own recovery tools, any pretence of legality is surely a joke.

The existence of the PKG installation option does indeed imply that the likes of emulators and media players could be ported and installed on to the PS3. However, in the meantime it's almost certainly the case that Sony's own dev tools would be needed to make any type of useful application, adding to the legality quagmire. All told, it's a nightmare scenario for Sony - but you could be fairly sure that its response will probably be swift. We can fully expect a mandatory firmware update to emerge from its engineering labs within days of the firm dissecting the hack, doubtless making it useless. Damage limitation could be the key, and similar to the OtherOS removal that Geohot's exploit brought about, Sony might be planning to minimise the physical number of consoles available capable of running the hack by effectively upgrading them out of contention.

If it turns out the memory patch theory does work, the swiftness of the response shouldn't be a problem for Sony's engineers. Changing the make-up of the modules affected could well be child's play for the platform holder also it would almost definitely necessitate a higher effort for the hackers to reverse-engineer the newest code and re-patch it. Additionally, over the long run, there's nothing to prevent Sony from introducing new varieties of encryption and execution in the process that future games boot.

However, the properties of the USB dongle itself are probably more complicated to defend against. Assuming that the unit itself comes from Sony's own servicing tools, this could demand a complete, brand-new revision of motherboard to successfully defeat. The main purpose of the dongle is to restore corrupt firmware - the chances are it has to operate on a hardware level that can't be touched by the updater. We've seen it before on Sony kit - the so-called "Pandora" battery for PSP that flips it into service mode operates on the same principle, and was only defeated by the platform holder when it revised the handheld's motherboard. Nothing could possibly be done to protect the existing devices.

Unless Sony is capable of rewriting the standard low-level code relating to the PS3's BIOS, there's little it can do to defeat the USB vector of attack - it's all about preventing the injected code from working. Moving forward we can expect the usual cat and mouse game between hackers and platform holder to unfold, and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that in the foreseeable future, Sony will be able to detect users of the device and rightfully ban them from accessing PSN, just like measures Microsoft is constantly on the undertake annually against gamers who flash their DVD drives to run copied software.

The complexity of Sony's security systems suggests that it will be able to keep one step ahead, however, there is nothing to stop people utilizing the hack to prevent firmware upgrades from taking place. Indeed, the chip itself is said to protect the console from executing system updates. This of course precludes PSN access, and in the fullness of time this approach will stop newer PS3 games from running as they'll be reliant on software elements found only inside newer firmware. Bearing in mind that PS Samurai is retailing for upwards of $130, there's quite a strong possibility that this may be the most expensive and short-lived hack ever made, and factoring in the simplicity of the hardware, the very high price seems almost reminiscent of a smash-and-grab raid on users intent on piracy regardless of what the price. The manufacturers of PS Samurai are charging so high price since the time frame with regards to exclusivity and the longevity of the hack itself is potentially very small.

USB Man, Beach-Ready by Sasha's Lab

Having said that, the exact properties for the USB stick and how future-proof its remain unknown. With mass-production of PS Samurai now in motion, and the first retail devices apparently set to ship before the month comes to an end, Sony's engineers are doubtless getting ready for the battle coming.

30 Million Wii’s & Mini Wiimote Unboxing!!

FYI, 30 million is a lot. It’s also the number of Wii’s that have been sold in the United States alone. Worldwide the number is closer to 45 million. Yeah, those are crazy bonkers numbers. Nintendo is killing it this generation, and it’s only a matter of time before Wii surpasses Sony’s PlayStation 2 as the top selling console of all time. Don’t sleep, it’ll happen.
In other news, I was the lucky recipient of POWER A’s Pro Pack Mini Wiimote & Nunchuck combination recently, and I’ve got the full unboxing just for you guys. I’m not gonna lie, it was one of the most original, and thought out packages I’ve ever received from a company. The box containing the goodies had a letter attached to it that was from my Wii. It was basically my Wii saying that I neglect it, and that hopefully with the Mini’s included I’ll give it the attention it deserves.

Inside the box I was the Pro Pack Mini, some Swedish Fish, two movie tickets, and a picture frame with a picture of my Wii on vacation with someone that would be me once I glued my face into the picture. Told you it was original. I haven’t had enough time to review the Wiimote and Nunchuck yet, so expect that by Friday. I will say that they are definitely smaller, but they don’t feel too small. I have small hands, so I think they may actually work for what I need. The one problem so far is with WiiMotionPlus; it looks HUGE when attached. I’m sure WMP is fairly proprietary, but hopefully POWER A figures out a way to make a mini version of the peripheral. Once they get that sorted, I can’t imagine they’d have problem selling plenty of Wiimotes. I mean, there are 30 million Wii’s out there… Check the jump for more pictures, as well as the full press release from Nintendo about the sales numbers. Enjoy, and stay thirsty my friends.

Nintendo’s Wii Video Game System Reaches 30 Million Sales Milestone
Nintendo’s internal sales figures show that the Wii™ video game system has now sold 30 million units in the United States alone. This significant milestone was reached in just 45 months. This further establishes Wii as the fastest-selling console in the history of the industry, reaching this milestone 15 months faster than the next best-selling console.
Wii launched in November 2006 and ushered in a new era of video games. The built-in motion controls of the iconic Wii Remote™ controller drew millions of new players to the world of video games. Kids started playing with their parents and grandparents, people got up off the couch and got active, and seniors and baby boomers formed virtual bowling leagues.
“More than any other video game system in history, Wii has expanded the world of video games to new audiences,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “This milestone is another reminder that people want fun games they can play with others – all at a value-minded price.”
To continue building on this foundation, Wii has a strong slate of games on the way for the fall. These include Metroid™: Other M on Aug. 31, Samurai Warriors™ 3 on Sept. 27, Kirby’s Epic Yarn™ and Wii Party™ this fall, and Donkey Kong Country™ Returns, FlingSmash™ and PokéPark™ Wii: Pikachu’s Adventure for the holidays. That’s in addition to New Carnival Games from 2K Play in September, NBA JAM from EA Sports in October, GoldenEye 007 from Activision and Just Dance 2 from Ubisoft this fall, and Disney Epic Mickey from Disney Interactive Studios and Sonic Colors from SEGA during the holidays.
The Wii video game system is now available in either black or white at a suggested retail price of $199.99. That price offers a great value to consumers, as it includes two engaging games, Wii Sports™ and Wii Sports Resort™, as well as the Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk™ controllers and a Wii MotionPlus™ accessory, which brings additional precision to specially designed games.
The 30 million milestone is a good time to look back at all the fun Wii games and experiences that are just not possible on any other system. One of the unique features of the Wii platform is that many games follow an evergreen sales trend that keep them selling over long periods of time.
According to the independent NPD Group, the top 10 best-selling Nintendo-published Wii games in the United States (through the end of June) are:
1. Wii Play™
2. Mario Kart™ Wii
3. Wii Fit™ (with Wii Balance Board™ accessory)
4. New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii
5. Wii Sports Resort
6. Super Smash Bros.™ Brawl
7. Super Mario Galaxy™
8. Wii Fit™ Plus (with Wii Balance Board™ accessory)
9. Mario Party™ 8
10. Link’s Crossbow Training
According to the independent NPD Group, the top 10 best-selling Wii games from third-party publishers in the United States (through the end of June) are:
1. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock from Activision
2. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games from SEGA

Dirt 3 spinning out May 24

Off-road racing sequel hitting stores worldwide at the end of May.
The Dirt franchise has lifted Codemasters to the top tier of racing game developers, ably assisted by the well-reviewed Race Driver: Grid, helping the firm win the Formula One licence to bring the pinnacle of motorsports back to consoles after a long absence.

I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe you should drive…

The long-standing Colin McRae franchise started life in 1998 and gained the Dirt moniker in 2007. Since then the franchise has gone from strength to strength as Dirt has moved from a serious rally sim into a more extreme motorsports festival. Codemasters today confirmed that gamers would be able to see if this trend is to continue on May 24, when Dirt 3 will be released worldwide on the playstation 3, PC, and xbox 360.

Dirt 3 looks to continue the series' move away from pure rallying with the addition of the gymkhana discipline to the event list. This sits alongside traditional rallies, point-to-point races, rallycross events, and more primarily off-road activities in a range of vehicles.

The title was first shown off in a trailer that was released in conjunction with the X Games in August 2010. For more on the Dirt series, check out the GameSpot review of Dirt 2, the latest hands-on with Dirt 3, or the developer diary below.

Big in Japan Jan. 24-30: The Last Story, Valkyria Chronicles 3

Mistwalker's latest wii RPG and Sega's PSP strategy sequel take top two spots as new releases dominate Japanese sales charts.
If the Wii role-playing game The Last Story really is the final game from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, at least the revered developer gets to go out on top. Tracking firm Media Create has released its Japanese sales charts for the week of January 24-30, with The Last Story in the best-seller spot for its debut week.

The Last Story may yet serve as a happy ending for Sakaguchi's career.
The Last Story sold 114,722 copies in its first week on sale, leading a flood of new releases that claimed seven of the top 10 spots on the charts. Sega's PSP strategy RPG Valkyria Chronicles III was a relatively close second, selling 102,779 copies for the week. Other notable new releases in the top 10 included the latest Kenka Banchou title from Spike (fourth place with 58,977 sold) and the Japanese debut of BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins for the ps3 (sixth place with 42,854 sold).

As might be expected, the three titles that retained a spot in the top 10 were the three best sellers from the week prior. Former sales champ Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (Final Mix) slipped all the way to ninth place, selling 20,528, while the previous week's third place finisher, Donkey Kong Country, rounded out the top 10 with 19,214 sold. The January 17-23 runner-up, Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3, showed the most staying power of the group, finishing the week in seventh place with 33,338 sold.

On the hardware front, the pecking order remained the same. Sony's PSP led the pack once again with 34,648 sold, followed by the PS3, which managed to move 25,149 new systems into Japanese gamers' homes. Although the Wii remained in third place, it did see a notable uptick in sales, with 19,448 sold compared to 14,547 the week prior.

Star Wars: The Old Republic needs only 500K subscribers - EA

CEO John Riccitiello claims that the forthcoming sci-fi MMORPG will be "substantially profitable" with just a half-million subscribers.
During a conference call with analysts following Electronic Arts' earnings report yesterday, executives did not comment on recent reports that Star Wars: The Old Republic has been delayed to September. They did say BioWare's massively multiplayer role-playing game will still ship during the publisher's 2012 fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2011, to March 31, 2012. Previously, the game had been slated for a spring 2011 release window.

Star Wars: The Old Republic will need only 500,000 subscribers to be profitable, says EA.

While tight-lipped on The Old Republic's date, EA CEO John Riccitiello was quite chatty about some other aspects of the game. First and foremost, he said that according to EA's models, it will not require a mammoth subscriber base a la Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft to turn a profit.

"We previously described to folks that 500,000 subscribers saw the game as substantially profitable, but it's not the kind of thing that we would write home about," he said. "[But] anything north of 1 million subscribers is a very profitable business."

Riccitiello went on to say that as EA sees it, its "leading competitor"--a thinly veiled reference to World of Warcraft--has 6 million of 12 million MMOG subscribers in Western markets. He believes that gives The Old Republic plenty of room to expand without even toppling WOW's dominance.

"So it's our view that we can be very successful without fundamentally challenging the market leader because we think we'll probably hit the smaller competitors harder when we get out there," he said. "Of course, we have no particular ambition to be a distant number two. Our ambitions are higher than that."

Riccitiello also said that The Old Republic is already being put through its QA paces. "We're currently testing it with a large-scale consumer testing, but not the beta scale level in the coming months," he told analysts.

New Kirby's Dream Land headed to Wii

Pink puffball next platformer confirmed for this year; nintendo also working on wii Rhythm Heaven, DS Pokemon Typing with keyboard peripheral.
It took four years for amorphous Nintendo mascot Kirby to get his own original wii game with last year's Kirby's Epic Yarn. The wait for his second game on the system looks to be considerably shorter, as Nintendo president Satoru Iwata today announced a new installment in the Kirby's Dreamland side-scrolling platformer series is in development for the Wii.

Cutest regurgitation-themed mascot of all time.
Iwata didn't give the game a name, but he did say it is in development at Hal Labs. The studio has decades of experience working on the franchise, from the original Kirby's Dream Land on the Game Boy in 1992 to more recent efforts like 2008's Kirby Super Star Ultra. The new Hal Kirby game is expected to see release later this year.

That wasn't the only new game unveiled by Iwata. The executive also confirmed that the DS Rhythm Heaven series (Rhythm Tengoku in Japan) would be getting a Wii installment, with a multiplayer mode allowing friends to call out each other's missteps. Like Kirby, the Wii version of the game is expected to debut later this year.

Iwata also announced Battle & Get! Pokemon Typing DS, a typing tutorial game set for Japanese release this April. Designed to appeal to adults, as well as children, Pokemon Typing will come with a wireless keyboard that will communicate with a Bluetooth receiver in the game card. While Nintendo isn't guaranteeing the keyboard will work with other devices, Iwata noted that he has personally managed to get it working with the iPhone and Android devices.

Samsung Tabulates 2 million slates, 80 million phones sold in Q4 2010, breaks revenue records

Score one for Samsung in its eternal struggle against South Korean nemesis LG. Whereas the Life's Good crew were licking their Q4 2010 wounds yesterday, Samsung's had the pleasure of announcing that the final quarter of last year helped it bust through all its previous fiscal records: total revenue ($139b), net income ($14b), and operating profit ($15.5b) all reached all-time highs. The fourth quarter's contribution was $2.7b in operating profit, 80.7 million mobile devices sold, 12.72 million flat panel TVs shipped, and two million Galaxy Tabs distributed to Android lovers yearning for some Froyo. That last number's pretty important as it shows the Tab's sales have almost doubled over the last month of the quarter -- it reached one million sales in early December -- indicating that there is indeed a hunger for slate-based computing. Oh, and if you're wondering what Samsung's planning for the future, there's a reminder that a device with a Super AMOLED Plus screen and a dual-core processor is coming to replace the Galaxy S in the first half of 2011. Good to know.

Japanese 3DS launch games confirmed

Eight titles to release alongside new handheld for its February 26 debut on home soil; game prices to range from 4,800 yen ($57) to 6,090 yen ($73); full Japanese 3DS schedule inside.

North American gamers keen on Nintendo's upcoming 3D-enabled handheld--the 3DS--probably already have January 19 marked into their diary, with the company planning an all-day event to showcase the new hardware offering. Japanese gamers have already gotten a sneak peek, however, with a three-day public preview event taking place in Tokyo this weekend. During the event's first day, nintendo took the opportunity to confirm which games will launch with the 3DS when it debuts in Japan on February 26.

While last year’s E3 featured an impressive number of upcoming games for the 3DS, only eight will be available in Japan on day one. According to gaming blog Andriasang, Nintendo says the only first party title to make launch will be Nintendogs + Cats, which will retail for 4800 yen ($57)--the same price in the territory as a standard DS game.

Other launch titles will include Winning Eleven 3DSoccer, Combat of Giant Dinosaur 3D, Super Street Fighter IV 3D, Samurai Warriors Chronicle, Puzzle Bobble 3D, Ridge Racer 3D, and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. Some third-party games will cost as much as 6,090 yen ($73).

The 3DS itself will retail for 40 percent more than the DSi in Japan, with launch pricing set at 25,000 yen ($306). While no price has been released for territories outside of Japan, the handheld is confirmed for release in North America and Europe before April 2011. For more information, check out GameSpot's latest breakdown of the 3DS.
